<< Return to program list

In addition to meeting the University of Michigan Rackham requirements for admission, applicants for the MS in SWE are required to meet the following requirements:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a grade point average of B or better. Applicants with lower GPAs may be granted conditional or probationary admission consistent with Rackham guidelines. Preference will be given to students with a background in Computer and Information Science and Computer Engineering.

Satisfactory completion of the following:

  1. Calculus I & II
  2. One course in probability and statistics or linear algebra)
  3. Programming Language (Preferably C/C++ I & II)
  4. One course in data structures with algorithm analysis
  5. One course in computer architecture
  6. One course in operating systems

Students may be admitted provisionally to make up any deficiencies. In this case, the applicant will be required to complete appropriate courses within two years from the date of entrance. These courses may not be used to satisfy degree requirements.

International applicants or applicants who received their bachelor's degree outside the United States must take the TOEFL exam (receiving a score of 560 or better) along with the TWE portion of the TOEFL exam (receiving a score of 5.0 or better), or take the MELAB (receive a score of 80 or better). Plus all those students whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL plus TWE, MELAB, or take courses in English as a second language.

Transfer of credit for the Master's in Software Engineering operates under the Rackham guidelines. In general this means that the credits may not have been used for a previous degree and cannot exceed six credits from other institutions or up to 1/2 of the program if taken in another Rackham program (note that 1/2 of the program is the total limit).

Applicants who lack eligibility requirement coursework have the opportunity to do the coursework through the Personal Enrichment Program at undergraduate rates. Applicants can inquire about the Personal Enrichment Program through the University of Michigan-Dearborn Undergraduate Admissions Office (220 SSC, 593-5100).
