Message from the Chair
Welcome from Bill Grosky, Professor and Chair

I welcome you to the web presence of the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

To support the mission of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, to be the leader in providing quality undergraduate and graduate programs in an environment integrated with engineering practice, research, and continuing professional education, in close partnership with the industrial community, our department mission is to provide an outstanding education in the various facets of computer and information science. Through our multiple degree programs, we provide students with the knowledge and tools for a successful career in this discipline. Our faculty, graduates of some of the best schools of this country and overseas, manage projects in many disparate areas, and seek to impart their knowledge and experience to their students. We strive to be on the leading computer and information science departments in the country.

Our department is one of four departments in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Our 14 faculty members conduct research in the areas of CAD/CAM integration, computer graphics, geometric modeling, database systems, data integration, data mining, multimedia information systems, web services, digital government, distributed systems, mobile computing, peer-to-peer systems, wireless networking, vehicular networking, security and privacy, real-time systems, software engineering, wireless sensor networks, and cyber-physical systems. Our main research labs are the Database and Multimedia Systems Laboratory, the Vehicular Networking Systems Research Laboratory, the Wireless Sensor and Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (WiSeMAN) Research Laboratory, the Virtual Engineering Laboratory, the Games and Multimedia Environments (G.A.M.E.) Laboratory, and the Agile Software Engineering Laboratory.

We have received sponsored research projects in these areas from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Michigan Life Science Corridor, Detroit Edison, Ford Motor Company, IBM, Motorola, among other government agencies and companies.

For undergraduates, we offer a B.S. in Computer and Information Science with a concentration in Computer Science (CISC) and a concentration in Information Systems (CISI), as well as a B.S. in Software Engineering. The CISC degree encourages students to choose among the following specialized tracks: engineering systems, game design, networking, and systems foundations.

For graduate students, we offer an M.S. in Computer and Information Science. In conjunction with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, we offer an M.S. in Software Engineering. We also offer an M.S. in Information Science and Technology in conjunction with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering. Finally, we offer a Ph.D. in Information Engineering in conjunction with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

Many of our programs are unique in the Detroit Metro area, such as our undergraduate and graduate software engineering degrees, and our game design specialization within the undergraduate CISC degree. We are also developing an undergraduate digital forensics program.
