Research Experience for Undergraduates at Temple University
The Temple University CIS Department will be hosting an REU Site program this year, focusing on mobile computing, wireless communication, and cloud computing. The 8-week summer research program will run from May 27 to July 25, 2012. Each participant will receive a stipend, on-campus housing, and meals. There will also be limited travel support for participants.

Go here  for additional information and application procedures. Students can also contact Dr. Chiu C. Tan at cctan@temple.edu  for more information. The site is co-funded by the Department of Defense ASSURE program in partnership with the National Science Foundation REU program.
Summer Research Program at University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Nebraska Summer Research Program is a consortium of NSF funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and other summer research opportunities programs (SROP).

One unique feature of the Nebraska Summer Research Program is the partnership between the REU and SROP programs and the Office of Graduate Studies. Students benefit in having a community of scholars in which to learn and with which to share research.

This intensive summer research experience provides mentoring and research experiences while allowing scholars to preview graduate school life. Students with a strong interest in graduate programs are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those from populations traditionally underrepresented in graduate education.

A complete listing of faculty mentors and research project descriptions can be found on our website here. Students can also find information about program benefits including a competitive stipend, room and board, travel expenses and more.

Summer 2012 programs include:

  • Applied Mathematics
  • Bioenergy Systems
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Nanomaterials and Nanoscience
  • Optics and Laser Physics
  • Redox Biology and Biochemistry
  • Virology

During the Nebraska Summer Research Program, students receive first-hand exposure to research and the experiences of graduate school. They work closely with faculty mentors and research teams of graduate students and other summer scholars. Students also have opportunities to participate in meaningful social and professional development activities outside of the laboratory.

Summer 2012 Opportunities for Undergraduate Students for Training in Biostatistics

Eight Summer Institutes for Training in Biostatistics (SIBS) are scheduled for the summer of 2012. SIBS are open to all US undergraduate and beginning graduate students (US citizens or permanent residents) and are sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Center for Research Resources. The programs have been very successful, but space is limited!

The program flyer explains that SIBS is offered at eight sites: Boston University, Emory University, University of Iowa, North Carolina State University-Duke Clinical Research Institute, University of Pittsburgh, University of South Florida, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Further details are given at the individual websites listed on the flyer.

SIBS introduces quantitatively oriented participants to Biostatistics. Students learn about the applications of statistical methods to biomedical research through coursework and hands-on experience working with real data collected in major clinical studies. Each of the program sites has its own unique features, but they all have a well-conceived, balanced agenda and an outstanding staff of dedicated investigators and professors. No specific training in statistics is required as a prerequisite.

Participants receive college credit that can transfer back to their home institutions. All costs are covered including tuition, housing, and all meals. Students may apply to more than one program, but should accept only one.

Summer Internship Opportunities for Undergraduates at the National Institute of Standards and Technology

The SURF program offers students in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields an opportunity to experience research this summer under the guidance of one of our NIST's scientists or engineers. The 11-week program will be held at NIST's Gaithersburg, MD campus from May 24 through August 9, 2012. FYI - there is a SURF program at our Boulder, CO campus too from May 21 - August 3, 2012. Participants will receive a $5,500 stipend and additional travel (e.g., one roundtrip airfare or mileage) and housing allowances (as necessary).

Basic eligibility requirements include: U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status; undergraduate status, recommend 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA; demonstrated potential for success and an interest in pursuing graduate study. Our review committee follows a comprehensive evaluation process and weighs each applicant's academic and personal achievements and potential match of the student's field of interest to available advisors and projects.
