NSF REU Program in Machine Learning

An opportunity for a 10-week research experience for undergraduate students is available in the area of machine learning. The program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and is a collaboration of the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne and University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Machine learning evolved from artificial intelligence and has enjoyred immense growth over the last 30 years. Gradually, it has spawned important areas like pattern recognition and detection, data mining, bioinformatics, and computer vision, among others.

Application deadline is March 30, 2009. Apply online here .

SIBHI - Summer Institute in BioEngineering and Health Informatics

Students interested in a multidisciplinary summer research experience are invited to apply to the Oakland University's Summer Institute in Bioengineering and Health Informatics (SIBHI). SIBHI is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Biomedical Imagining and Bioengineering (NIBIB) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The students selected to participate will be immersed in a research environment under the mentoring of an interdisciplinary group of caulty. This program is a full-time comprehensive educational experience targeted to minorities and women, in particular.

Apply by March 16, 2009

Program information and application forms are available here.

Research Opportunities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has a long history and interest in providing hands-on research experiences to students at all academic levels. Over the years, these research experience programs have enhanced students' academic curricula and at the same time have helped the Laboratory (1) develop its own workforce and (2) contribute to the national vision for excellence in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. ORNL is a multi-program science and technology laboratory managed for the U.S. Department (DOE) by UT-Battelle, LLC. Scientists and engineers at ORNL conduct basic and applied research and development to create scientific knowledge and technological solutions that strengthen the nation's leadership in key areas of sciences, engineering, mathematics, and technology. ORNL scientists are also fully supportive of their responsibility to help mentor the next generation of scientists.

You must meet the qualifications of all programs if you would like to complete an application. You can find the eligibility requirements on the programs web sites.

Participants will receive a stipend based on academic level. Plus some programs provide a housing allowance, and one round trip to and from the lab from your university or home. Certain eligibility requirements will need to be met in order to be eligible for the housing and travel. See information provided on web site.

Summer Institutes for Training in Biostatistics

SIBS (Summer Institutes for Training in Biostatistics) is scheduled this summer June 8--July 17. SIBS is open to all US undergraduates (citizens or permanent residents). Sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the program has been very successful, but space is limited.

The program flyer explains that SIBS is offered at three sites: Boston University, North Carolina State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Further details are given at the individual websites listed on the flyer.

SIBS introduces quantitatively oriented undergraduate students to Biostatistics. Students learn about the applications of statistical methods to biomedical research through coursework and hands-on experience working with real data collected in major clinical studies. Each of the three program sites has its own unique features, but they all have a well-conceived, balanced agenda and an outstanding staff of dedicated investigators and professors.

Participants receive college credit that can transfer back to their home institutions. All costs are covered: tuition, housing, meals, etc.
