Lecture Media

All CECS Online graduate courses are recorded and delivered asynchronously. Recorded lectures are posted in an Adobe Flash format. You may be asked to download Flash on your first log in if it is not already installed on your system (this is a free download). For best video quality, a high-speed internet connection is required.

Online Course Access

Courses will be accessible on VLT on or after the first day of the semester. If you log on to VLT sooner than the first day of the semester, your course may not be on your Dashboard, or it may not be updated for the current term. Please DO, however, create a user profile if you do not already have one and be sure to include your UMID.

For more information about accessing your course or your VLT account, please refer to the help page at https://vlt.engin.umd.umich.edu/help/.  If you have any difficulty accessing your course, please contact Susan Guinn at 313-593-4000 or sguinn@umich.edu.

Please DO NOT use the enrollment key that may be posted by the instructor. Logging in through the enrollment key will prohibit access to the video for the course. When you log on to your account, your course should appear on your dashboard.

Textbooks

Textbooks for web-based courses may be purchased from the UMD Campus Bookstore. The bookstore can be reached at 1-313-593-5551 or at http://umd.bkstore.com. Textbooks may also be available from other vendors - just be sure to order the correct edition.

Examinations and Homework

All homework and assignments for online courses can be submitted by upload using VLT, or by fax to 313-593-4070. Other methods approved by your instructor are also acceptable.

All examinations require a proctor. Additional information about examination proctoring can be found at: http://www.engin.umd.umich.edu/DLN/exams.php . Please review the information, complete the proctor certification form and return it no later than the end of the first two weeks of the term. If you plan to complete examinations with the on-campus section of the course, you do not need to submit the form. If you do not submit an examination form, we will assume that you will be taking examinations with the live section of the course. Please note that if you plan to take examinations with an EPD staff member, you must schedule a day and time in advance. Call 313-593-4000 or email Ben Goraj at dlnexams@engin.umd.umich.edu at least 24 hours in advance to schedule your exam.

Communication

All University of Michigan-Dearborn students are required to maintain and routinely view email from a University of Michigan-Dearborn email address. You may forward this email to another personal or business email address of your choice, however, the student is responsible for ensuring that the forward works properly. Announcements regarding courses, UM-Dearborn general announcements, registration and student accounting information will all be sent to your UM-Dearborn email address. To learn how to forward your email, visit the ITS website at http://www.its.umd.umich.edu/ In addition, the Virtual Learning Tool platform has an internal email system. You should view this email regularly as well.

Drop / Add, Withdrawal and Tuition and Fees

To avoid financial penalty, please adhere to all UM-Dearborn policies regarding changes to your course schedule and tuition and fee payment. Students enrolled in CECS online courses are charged a web tuition assessment in addition to standard tuition and fees assessments. This information can be found at http://www.umd.umich.edu/registration/.

CECS Code of Academic Conduct

Students enrolled in CECS Online courses will be required to acknowledge that they have read and understand the Code of Academic Conduct when logging into Online courses for the first time.

Library Access

When accessing the Mardigian Library Online resources from off-campus, students are required to authenticate access with name and the eight significant digits of their University ID number, located on your student identification card.
