About the Department
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), which is responsible for administering the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering programs, has about 325 students enrolled in the sophomore through senior years. Each year approximately 60 - 70 students graduate with a Bachelor's degree in EE/CE and about 20 students graduate with a master's degree in EE/CE. We are proud of our high retention rate which exceeds 60%. While most of the graduates go on to work in industry often in a design and development environment, a few pursue full-time graduate studies at regional and national universities.

Three teams from U of M-Dearborn took part in the 2013 ION Autonomous Snowplow Competition in St. Paul, MN January 24-27. Led by their advisor, Dr. Nattu Natarajan, the university's big winner was Team Yeti, which took a third place win and was awarded $3,000 and the Bronze Snow Globe Award. Team Geili came in fifth and won $700. Team Bang had serious problems with their plow in the first round of the competition and were unable to recover, ending the competition in eighth place.
Team Yeti used a brand new vehicle designed as part of their senior design project by Mark Bajor, Mengxing Chen, Craig Cowing, and Cody Schmitt and the software for the robot was developed by Angelo Bertani and Zach DeGeorge. Teams Geili and Bang used an existing platform designed by Alan Akroush. Team Geili consisted of Doris Kotori, Derek Langley, Wangsong Li, Shihe Liu, Xuanchen Liu, Ken Yesh, Mohan Zhou, Qi Zhou. Team Bang consisted of Jingwei Xiong, Qijie Xu, Junyao Wang, Jiaqi Ma, Qihao Deng, and Yang Xiong. Each of UM-Dearborn's three teams was composed of students belonging to the Intelligent Systems Club. The ION snowplow competition began in 2011, with members of the ISC participating in the event each year. Team Yeti has been a mainstay in the event since that inaugural competition, where they came in fourth before moving up to a third place victory in 2012. The Intelligent Systems Club began in 2002 and works to promote robotics and the development of technical knowledge. In addition to the snowplow competition, the club regularly competes in the Autonomous Lawnmower Competition, Intelligent Ground Vehicle Challenge, and the Freescale Cup Challenge, among others.
