On behalf of the faculty and staff, I welcome you to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).
The ECE department is one of four departments in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-D). UM-D is one of three campuses of the University of Michigan operating under the policies of the Board of Regents. The campus, located on 196 acres of the former estate of automotive pioneer Henry Ford, was founded in 1959 as a senior level institution offering junior, senior and graduate level courses and degrees. In 1971, UM-D became a comprehensive university offering four-year degree programs in liberal arts, sciences and engineering and graduate programs at the Master's level.
One of the primary missions of the UMD campus is to provide high-quality engineering education to students in the metropolitan Detroit area. The ECE department offers Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The department's mission is to provide an outstanding education in electrical and computer engineering. The ECE programs provide students with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in electrical and computer engineering fields. Students have the opportunity to interact with our departments' diverse faculty and student population and obtain the practical experience to prepare them for exciting professional careers. As one of the leading programs in the region, we continually strive to become one of the nation's top electrical and computer engineering programs.
Currently, the ECE department has 15 full-time and seven highly qualified adjunct faculty members. We recruit our faculty from internationally top-ranked universities. The ECE faculty is actively involved in research and collaboration with industry and government agencies. The faculty's research activities span all areas of electrical and computer engineering, including signal and image processing, intelligent systems, pattern recognition, communication systems and information theory, VLSI, systems and controls, digital systems and computer architecture, vehicle electronics, and power electronics. Faculty have received research funding from government agencies including National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, U.S. Army TACOM, State of Michigan, and many industrial companies including Ford Motor Company, TRW, Royal Design and Mfg., Jabil Circuits, TRW and Lear Inc.
The department has a long history of integrating research with teaching, providing extraordinary opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to become involved with leading-edge research. ECE faculty and students conduct research not only within the department, but also in collaboration with numerous industrial companies, which often lead to carrier opportunities for students.
The ECE department encourages students to pursue their research interests and take coursework with faculty in all areas. We are committed to providing a diverse array of scholarly activities and experiences to our students, suited to their individual interests and needs. One of the principal features of the Electrical and Computer Engineering programs is the active involvement of faculty in all aspects of academic education from advising, teaching, laboratory work to project design. Our class sizes are relatively small and individual attention to students is emphasized. Students are provided with ample opportunities to acquire critical laboratory skills in the areas of circuit design, automatic control applications and computers (hardware and software).
The university is conveniently located in the heart of the automotive industry. This area is a thriving center of high technology with numerous large and small firms specializing in all aspects of electrical and computer engineering such as electronics, microprocessors, computer networks and communications, hybrid vehicle technology, vehicle networks and multimedia systems. Given the strategic location of our campus, the ECE department is focused upon forming industrial alliances that help us to shape our education objectives and enhance our academic programs so that our students will graduate to be highly qualified engineers, entrepreneurs or leaders in industry.
