Symposium on Materials for Lightweight Vehicles
The Center for Lightweighting Automotive Materials and Processing (CLAMP) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is organizing a one-day Symposium on Materials for Lightweight Vehicles on December 8, 2009. The purpose of the Symposium is to bring together researchers and practitioners for discussions on the recent status/outcome/applications of some of the current R&D efforts on lightweighting automobiles. It will also provide a forum for exchanging information, expressing views, and developing dialog on the future research needs of structural automotive materials.
The Symposium will include a few invited presentations, but there will be ample opportunity for the participants to ask questions and engage in informal discussions on related technical issues and concerns. The participants will be engineers, managers, researchers and students interested in gaining knowledge on research being conducted at automotive companies, national labs, universities and material suppliers/ organizations. The invited presentations will encompass various material disciplines such as steel, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, polymer matrix composites, etc. One of the objectives of the Symposium will be to promote \\\"interdisciplinary\\\" thinking for vehicle weight reduction.
This is a free event; however, to plan for the meeting and meals, pre-registration by December 2 is required. Please indicate your interest in attending the symposium by either calling Sherry Boyd at 313-593-5582 or sending an e-mail with your name, company affiliation and contact information to sjboyd@umich.edu.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn will host the 5th IEEE International Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference (VPPC’09) later this year, under the leadership of Chris Mi, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, who will serve as the general chair of the conference.
“It’s appropriate to hold this conference in Dearborn, the heartland of automotive industry, since our theme is ‘Sustainability: Hybrid, Plug-in, Fuel Cell and Battery Technology,’” Mi said.
Among other activities, the conference will include keynote speeches by top executives of major automotive companies, as well as presentations from government and academic experts. In addition, a special banquet will be held at the Henry Ford.
The conference, to be held September 7-11, will feature five technical tracks, 20 special sessions, a technical forum, six tutorials and an exhibition. It is co-sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.
“The organizing committee is working very hard to make this a successful conference and the conference of choice for people in this field,” Mi said. “We also will be looking for volunteers, including students, who will be allowed free admission to parts of the conference.”

Electric Drives: Automotive Chassis Applications
Dr. Suresh Gopalakrishnan
Abstract:
The automotive electrical/electronics market has been growing steadily in the last few decades due to the need for electrification, availability of low-cost and reliable motor drive technologies, etc. The main motivation for more electrification in automobiles is to improve fuel economy, reduce emissions, and enhance vehicle performance and passenger comfort. In this seminar, the electric drive applications in the area of automotive chassis will be presented. Typical chassis applications include electric power steering, active front steering, electric brakes, active suspension, etc. that need high performance drives. Packaging constraints, need for high performance, low-cost, high reliability, fault tolerant performance are some of the key challenges in developing electric drives for such applications. As a specific example, the challenges involved in developing motor drive technology for brake-by-wire system will be presented in detail. |

Title: Digitally Assisted Analog Design
Presenter: Dr. T.R. Viswanathan
Abstract:
Integrated Circuit Technology enables highly complex digital systems on a single chip at affordable cost. Most signals, for example audio and video, are analog in nature. Thus signal processing systems are mixed-signal IC\'s containing analog, digital and interface circuits called A to D and D to A converters that require large dynamic range (SNR) and high linearity (low distortion). Such high-precision circuits that maintain performance over process and temperature variations are difficult to achieve. Thus modern mixed signal system design employs what are known as digitally intensive, digitally assisted or digitally inspired analog design technique to keep the cost low. The talk will give an overview of this methodology using sigma-delta converters as an example. |
